Upload Microsoft Office Documents to Google Drive

Instructional Video

As part of your University of Arizona CatMail account, you also have access to the google suite of applications. This includes Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, which are comparable to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

These steps walk you through uploading documents created in Microsoft Office to your Google account so you can continue to edit.

Supported Microsoft Office File Formats

• Word files: .doc, .docx, .dot
• Excel files: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm (macro enabled Excel files), .xlt
• PowerPoint files: .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .pot

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. On your computer, open a browser and navigate to drive.google.com.

2. If this is your first time logging in, you should be presented with the google drive home page, click Go to Drive and the google sign-in screen appears.

  • If taken directly to gmail without logging in, verify you're using your CatMail account by looking in the upper right corner.
  • You should see the University of Arizona branding
  • If you don't, you're signed into a different gmail account.
  • Click on the picture or icon in the upper-right. You should either see your UA email account (click on that) OR click Add another account. If you're adding another account you're then directed to the gmail login, which is the next step below (step 3).

3. Enter your UA email address (yourNetID@email.arizona.edu) and click Next. You should now be on the UA WebAuth page.

4. Enter your NetID and Password.

5. From the top left, click New > File upload from the drop-down menu.

6. Locate and select the file you're uploading.

  • This is the Microsoft Office file (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint), which is likely saved on your computer.

7. Click Open (if using a PC) or Choose (if using a Mac).

8. You see a small pop-up window (typically in the bottom right of the browser) that indicates the upload is complete and displays the name of the document.

9. Click the file name.

10. Your document, spreadsheet, or slideshow is now open in the Google application.

Note: Since your files reside in the google cloud, they auto-save as you edit. Use the undo button in google drive or your keyboard commands to undo your edits.

To access your files again later:

1. Follow steps 1-4 above.

2. Your view defaults to show your My Drive, which is where your files are stored.

3. Click on the item you want to open and continue editing.
